The Dixie Sunbowl is more than just a venue. It is a living symbol of St. George’s community strength, the Dixie Spirit, and generations of shared tradition.
Built in the years following World War II, the Sunbowl came to life through the determination and generosity of volunteers, St. George Lions Club members, and residents who gave both their time and resources to make it possible. In 1947, after months of grassroots organizing and fundraising, the Sunbowl opened in time for the Dixie Roundup Rodeo. Since that day, it has stood as a beloved downtown St. George gathering place.
Over the decades, the Sunbowl has hosted everything from rec league, high school and college football, high school graduations, festivals, concerts, and rodeos. These traditional events are so crucial to the fabric of our community. In fact, I can count on one hand the number of Dixie Roundup Rodeos I’ve missed during my life.
The passage of time, however, made it clear that significant improvements were necessary to preserve the Sunbowl for future generations. That’s why we went to you, the voters, to see if you would allow for an extensive renovation to take place. We put the Trails, Parks and Recreation General Obligation Bond on the ballot in 2023, and it passed in resounding fashion!
The voter-approved funds made the renovation possible. I consider it an investment in both heritage and function. It allows us to maintain the character and importance of this historic facility while making it safer, more comfortable, and better equipped to serve the public.
The improvements bring the facility into the modern era while honoring its legacy. The renovated Sunbowl has increased capacity to approximately 7,300 people, allowing more residents and visitors to enjoy major events. By reducing the central rodeo surface and bringing seating closer, the design will improve sightlines and enhance the overall spectator experience. More shade, enhanced restrooms, concessions, lighting, sound infrastructure, circulation, and service access make the venue safer, more functional, and welcoming to all.
We will host the Dixie Sunbowl Grand Reopening on September 10, 2026, at 6 p.m. This is a free event. We hope you will join us to take a glimpse of this renovated community treasure.
