It’s an honor to address you as your mayor. Having served on the City Council, I understand the significant responsibility entrusted to the mayor’s office. I am dedicated to doing my best to serve the people of St. George.

I was born and raised here, when St. George had fewer than 8,000 residents. A lot has changed since then.

Our city is growing quickly. With that growth comes energy and opportunity—and it also tests our roads, water, housing, and sense of community. My approach as mayor is straightforward: steady and focused leadership rooted in common-sense values and respect for your hard-earned dollars.

Since 2011, I’ve served on the City Council with a simple principle: respect the taxpayer. Your dollars must be used efficiently, transparently, and for projects that truly benefit the public.

In the years ahead, we aim to:

• Keep public safety strong by supporting police, fire, and emergency communications.

• Take care of the basics—well-maintained streets, parks, and trails.

• Protect our water future through conservation, efficiency, and smart infrastructure investment.

• Expand housing choices by encouraging a variety of options while preserving neighborhood character.

• Strengthen our local economy by helping small businesses thrive and by leveraging many of our great healthcare and educational assets, such as Intermountain Health, Utah Tech University, Dixie Technical College, and others.

• Plan infrastructure before rooftops so growth pays for itself and existing residents aren’t left holding the bill.

• And above all else, listen to you, our residents!

I bring the perspective of a small business owner and rancher. My wife, Tawny, and I operate Hughes Mortuary and our family cattle ranch on the Arizona Strip. Those experiences remind me that municipal government exists to serve people and that good stewardship requires diligence, humility, and hard work. You can expect open communication, sound budgeting, and decisions grounded in data and community values.

If you have questions, concerns, or ideas, I want to hear them. Feel free to email me at jimmie.hughes@sgcityutah.gov or call or text me at 435-772-6208.
